What are muscle cramps?

When the muscle contracts and sends out painful spasms, and you cannot relax it and it gets worse when you try to move, you are probably getting muscle cramps.

There are three different muscles that are common to get muscle cramps, they are:

  • quadriceps (front of the thigh)
  • hamstrings (back of the thigh)
  • gastrocnemius (calf)

Symptoms of muscle cramps

The main symptoms of muscle cramps are:

  • Pain
  • Spasms
The symptoms can continue for some time and once the muscle relaxes, you will feel better.

Causes of muscle cramps

The exact cause of muscle cramps is unknown. There are factors that contributes to muscle cramps and they are:

  • not enough warm ups before exercise
  • overuse of the muscle
  • shortened muscles

Treatment of muscle cramps

If you are having a muscle cramp, you can:

  • Stretch the muscle until the cramp stops
  • Ice
  • Drink more water to replenish your body’s fluid
